National Library of Australia Adds Betties to Collection

The National Library of Australia has asked if they can add us to their collection!

Specifically, we're now part of the Library's PANDORA collection, which is an archive of online publications that are considered to be of "national significance" and "lasting cultural value".

What this essentially means is that this blog will be regularly archived and preserved, even as technology changes over time, so that people anywhere can have "access to it in perpetuity" — that is, forever.

How cool is that? The Betties have made it!

Canberra gets snap happy from 11 July to 12 October 2008 with Vivid, Australia's inaugural national photographic festival. Lorna Sim has gone into over-drive for the festival, participating in four shows and awards.

First is Space, a group show of landscape photography in its broadest sense, at Canberra Institute of Technology's designspace@CIT Gallery from 14 to 25 July.

Then Lorna has entered the ACT Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) Print Awards, which will be judged on 22 July at the National Musuem of Australia.

She's in another group show at the Blue Roof Gallery in Tharwa, called "My favourite thing is to go where I have never been", which is a Dianne Arbus quote.

Then it's HIY2008 — Hang It Yourself at Photoaccess. Photography meets street art in this show ... there's no curator and no interference ... anyone can stick up to five images anywhere they want on the walls of what is being called "the ultimate open access exhibition". Look out for a bunch of Betties participating in this one.

Obsessed photographers usually have an arsenal of toys — that's why I've taken to carrying a huge pink woven bag on shoots. As an aside, it has two advantages: first, you can spot me when I'm lost in a crowd; and, second, I don't look like a photographer, so can sneak my cameras into all sorts of forbidden places!

So, what's your favourite camera at the moment? And why?

My Holga Micro 110 is currently my weapon of choice. It's small, fun and no fuss. I'd love it even more if it had a "B" setting but, hey, where would that fit on a 5cm camera! Unexpectedly, my shots from this camera have been the most viewed and commented on at my Flickr page.

"Pitch to other bloggers" is one of Alyson's tips, and it fits perfectly with how she came to use my photograph in the first place. Here are some portraits that I did a couple of weeks ago. I realised that I hadn't completed the portrait topic even though I set it as we were finding it difficult to arrange some free time in our busy schedules :).

These are some portraits for Industrial Designer Chris Hardy to use with his Workshopped design competition entry. He asked for a contemporary urban feel to his image so we went to the NGA and used the lines and walls of the building in combination with my new lensbaby. His Urchin Light from last year is definitely worth a look. His 2008 entry isn't up yet. I am hanging to see it.

Beauty Contests: No More Stigma?

Is it my imagination or are beauty contests becoming acceptable again?

Back in the '90s, when us girls wore boots instead of stilettos, they were absolutely shameful ... so much so that I remember protests.

What changed? Young women have certainly shunned the hard image of feminism and, in fashion and home particularly, embraced femininity.

Anyway, I've finished working on this shot from the Miss Summernat's Beauty Contest of 2005 and only just noticed the frame number is the perfect 10.

As an aside, I've noticed the rather mundane things in my life carry stigmas, such as living in the country, being a "housewife" and believing in God. I'm curious to know if this experience rings a bell with other Betties.

Contemporary Portraits Trends

I've been contemplating trends in contemporary Australia photographic portraiture over the past six months. After browsing the finalists of the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 and Head On 2008, I've decided only the following subjects are allowed:

Old people
Indigenous Australians
The photographer's partner and/or children
Sick people
People with their pets, preferably a dog
Thespians and other artistic types.

And style must conform to one of the following devices:

The subject must display no glimmer of happiness. In fact, suffering, especially of frail old people or anyone recovering from surgery, is preferred
Backgrounds must either be of hip, vintage-style wallpaper or devoid of any clues as to the personality of the subject
The portrait must not visually tell a story or provide a context.

Am I bitter? Probably. But do you think I'm right?

For the last decade, the annual Krappy Camera Competition has celebrated plastic cameras in all their unreliable glory.

Check out "Seeking Imperfection" Hailey Eber's review of this year's event, published in the Brooklyn Rail. Soho Photo Gallery hosts an exhibition of short-listed images ... browse through the 50 finalists here.

There is only one problem with this fabulous event ... photographers living outside the US can't enter. Boo hoo for the Betties!

Update: good news for Australian plastic camera fans ... Blender Gallery in Sydney ran a similiar competition last year and plans to continue to momentum this year. How exciting!

Ed Whalan: Beyond Border Town

Congratulations to Ed Whalan, whose first solo show opens tomorrow night at 6pm in the Huw Davies Gallery at Photoaccess. Given that Ed has been involved with Photoaccess for the last decade as a board and staff member, tutor, mentor, advisor, event and exhibition co-ordinator, curator, dog wrangler and booze quaffer, this event is going to be huge!

Beyond Border Town is a tribute to Captains Flat, the small village near Canberra in which Ed lives. His images of this rural community are in keeping with the dynamic and super-wide panoramic style he has experimented with for the last couple of years. It's worth noting that the pictures in this show are so wide they had to be cropped in half to actually fit on this blog!

Australian rural life is usually represented, ironically, by city-dwellers, who fall into using clichés — country "folk" are either shown to be backward and ignorant or, at best, quirky. So it's great to see someone who actually lives in a rural area showing us their own community, especially in such a vibrant and sophisticated manner.

Okay Betties and Betties fans, it's officially okay to wallow when life sucks.

That's right, according to Alyson B Stanfield, who runs ArtBizCoach.com and ArtBizblog.com. She's written a neat and practical article in the current edition of her newsletter that tells us how to "Emerge From a Slump", which lists having a little wallow in self-pity as the first step in feeling better. Of course, nine other more productive steps follow to re-inspire us and purge the angst.

This is just the pick up I needed today. I've got such a bad cold that it feels like I'm listening to everything underwater!

I'm reading Taste by Kate Colquhoun, a book that explores the history of Britain through food. I know it's magnificent because I've been obsessively experimenting in the kitchen with tidbits from the Roman occupation to Tudor times. Justin, my husband, never knows what might appear on the dinner table: it could be a buttery pastry filled with sweet potato and olives or a blancmange of rice boiled in almond milk, both Medieval in origin.

Peacock, however, is one thing I certainly won't serve.

The ancient Romans could only stomach the bird's tough flesh by mincing it into rissoles, Colquhoun writes. Medieval lords in Britain had peacocks carefully skinned, roasted with cumin and re-stitched into their plumes for novel table centrepieces. One can only imagine the food poisoning that resulted from the unhygienic mix of cooked meat and raw skin!

Another review has come in for Kerry Baylor and Susan Stayer's respective solo shows. In The Canberra Times, Charly Ogilvie describes the works as "two affectionate portraits of place", adding that both shows "reflect assurance and skill".

Ogilvie appears to understand Kerry's use of cross-processed film to get a punchy, super-saturated and vintage look. She also seems to view Kerry's tribute to her suburban home of Watson as one of tough love, where life is shown warts and all.

Ogilvie seems particularly taken with what she describes as Susan's "visual love letter" to the beautiful Dunbarton Oaks, praising the photographer's precise vision and careful selection of images.

Very few photographers can say they've been praised alongside Max Dupain, so congratulations to Kerry Baylor and Susan Stayer who shared a review with one of Australia's most famous photographers on the Arts Hub website last week.

Writer Narelle Phillips picked up a sense of urban "detachment and anonymity" in Watson, Kerry's eerie study of the suburb in which she lives. Getting a national review for your first solo show isn't bad!

Phillips was also impressed with the detail in Dunbarton Oaks, Susan's study of the gardens at the historic property and international centre for scholarship of the same name in Washington. The blend of technical quality, antiquity and mystery went down very well.

Kerry and Susan's shows were both on at Photoaccess from March 13-30.

Dunbarton Oaks in Washington is best known as an international centre for scholarship where academics delve into Byzantine, Pre-Columbian or landscape architecture studies. For Susan Stayer, however, its assocations are less taxing — she has enjoyed many days wandering the historic site's 10 acres of dreamy gardens, which blend the best of traditional French, English and Italian design.

Also called Dunbarton Oaks , Susan's exhibition is fittingly like a languid Sunday picnic, with each detailed tidbit inviting another bite in a totally flavoursome meal.

After looking at Elizabeth Soule's Little Zoo series, you'll see there's no excuse not to take amazing pictures with the bare minimum of tools. Using nothing but plastic animals, paper backgrounds and window lights, she has created witty, evocative and perfectly designed images.

Should we be inspired or filled with envy? Surely a little of the latter is okay given the brilliance of her vision.

Fun Collaborative Idea

Susan Stayer found this cool idea for collaborative photography on Mr E. Cipher's Flickr page.

He explains, "We both took our medium format cameras, at the same time, on the same day, to the same locations....3 of each room....we picked one of each room from the other's pictures and put them together as a diptych, altering them as we liked."

This experiment has been done by just two photographers, but could effectively be done with as many as four or five.

In August 2007, the Australia Council for the Arts presented Multicultural Arts: Cultural Citizenship for the 21st Century, a symposium to discuss the contribution of multicultural arts to Australia's cultural life, artistic practice and national identity.

Our very own Lorna Sim photographed the event: "I thought my images were never used," she says, "But I recently came across a few when I was doing my usual web surfing".

What this really means is that Lorna was doing Google search on herself! Naturally no-one else does that (cough, cough).

Seriously, photographing events is hard work — you've got to deal with ultra-dim lighting and microphones masking speakers' faces. But Lorna has done a fantastic job ... check it out here.

I had intended to try and photograph the chorus of maggies I hear every morning when I walk to the bus stop. I could hear their choir reheasal but when I looked up I saw the galas sitting on the wires like notes on a sheet of music.

I bet you've never seen a beauty contest judge looking like this before! The Jack Daniels t-shirt, reflective glasses and surrounding skimpy babes make the nature of this competition obvious — that's right, it's at a car festival.

I've only just started scanning my negatives from Summernats 2005, where I gratefully accepted a media pass into the beauty pageant pit. Naturally, the winner was blonde with big boobs, but she was surprisingly curvaceous everywhere else too. The judge's outfit may look like he's swallowed a rainbow, but he was all for beauty over a size 14. That makes him the real winner in my book.

This image is in the stairwells of Parliament House where I work. They are very quiet most of the time but once you get in there and start walking around that quickly changes with the echos. You try and imagine what they have heard but only get a concrete silence in response.

I bought this Brie to be consumed with wine and pate on a rug at Tropfest. I didn't get very far as it was a bit bolder than expected and not as appetising as most. Anyway after getting home I forgot to remove it from the bag on the kitchen bench. Now it is wasted and the only way to get any value out of it is to take a photo and post it for all to see what not to do. It almost looks like wastelands of cheese.

I walked into the Country Road store in sydney, with my camera strap hanging off my neck and the camera at waist-level, lens wide open, one finger casually placed over the shutter button, ready to shoot anything that was red, white and blue. These are what I managed to come up with, but I didn't end up buying any of them.
